Sports and Orthopedic Massage Therapy in Portland

Targeted manual therapy for injury, performance support, and long-term movement health.

What is Sports and Orthopedic Massage Therapy?

Sports and orthopedic massage therapy is a hands-on treatment that helps reduce pain, improve mobility, and support recovery after injury or when recovering from training. At SportsLab, massage therapy is often used alongside physical therapy to help you reach your goals with the help of your care team.

More than Relaxation

While relaxation is a benefit, sports and orthopedic massage is focused on addressing the underlying cause of pain or movement restrictions. Treatment is guided by your symptoms and your goals—not a standard routine. Each session is focused on a specific concern, using hands-on treatment to support recovery and improve how you move. (And yes, sometimes this requires getting at that grumpy deep tissue!)

Who Our Massage Services Are Designed For

Massage therapy can support many different stages of recovery and performance. Our therapists take the time to understand what’s bringing you in before developing a treatment approach that’s right for you.

Competitive Athletes

Training and competition place repeated demands on your body. Sports massage can help support recovery between workouts, address muscle tension, and prepare you for your next training session or event.

Injury Rehab Patients

Massage therapy is often used alongside physical therapy to support recovery after an injury. It can help address soft tissue restrictions that develop during the healing process and complement your overall treatment plan.

People with Chronic Conditions

Living with ongoing pain or stiffness can make everyday movement more difficult. Massage therapy may help reduce discomfort, improve mobility, and support your ability to stay active over time.

Orthopedic and Sports Massage Types We Offer

The techniques we use depend on what you’re experiencing and what you’re hoping to accomplish. Below are some of the approaches our massage therapists use, based on what best supports your goals. We adjust treatment as your needs change.

Sports Massage

Designed for both recreational athletes and professionals, sports massage can help prepare your body for training, support recovery after exercise, and address muscle tension.

Deep Tissue and Trigger Point Therapy

Deep tissue and trigger point therapy target areas of muscle tension that may be contributing to pain or restricted movement and improving the way they function.

Myofascial Release

Myofascial release focuses on the connective tissue that surrounds your muscles to help improve mobility and reduce restrictions that affect the way you move.

Injury Repair Techniques

Your massage therapist may use techniques that support muscle and soft tissue healing while working alongside your overall rehabilitation plan.

Conditions and Goals We Support

Massage therapy can be used to address a wide range of conditions and recovery goals. Your therapist will recommend treatment based on your symptoms and how massage fits into your overall plan of care.

Injury Recovery and Soft Tissue Repair

Soft tissue injuries can take time to heal, even after the initial pain begins to improve. Hands-on treatment can help reduce muscle tension as your body recovers.

Athletic Performance and Training Recovery

Recovery is an important part of every training plan. Sports massage can help your body recover between workouts and prepare for the demands of your next session.

Mobility and Range of Motion Improvements

Limited mobility can affect everything from daily activities to exercise. Our treatment plans focus on the areas that restrict movement so you can move more comfortably.

Chronic Tension, Stress, and Sleep Disruption

Muscle tension can build over time—even without an injury. Massage therapy can help relieve that tension, making it easier to relax and move more comfortably.

What To Expect From Your Session

Knowing what to expect can help you feel more comfortable before your first appointment. Your massage therapist will explain each step of the session and answer any questions along the way.

Your First Visit: Assessment and Intake

Your first appointment at SportsLab begins with a conversation about your symptoms, health history, and goals for treatment. Your therapist will also assess the areas you’re experiencing discomfort before developing a treatment plan.

During Your Massage Session

Your therapist will explain the techniques being used and adjust treatment based on your comfort level. If something feels too intense or you’d like more—or less—pressure, you’re encouraged to speak up at any time.

After Your Session: What You May Notice

It’s common to feel some soreness after treatment, especially if you’re addressing an injury or longstanding muscle tension. Many patients also notice gradual improvements over time, so drinking plenty of water and following your therapist’s recommendations can support your recovery.

What is the difference between a sports massage and a regular massage?

Sports massage is a targeted treatment that’s based on your symptoms and goals. Unlike a traditional relaxation massage, each session focuses on supporting recovery, improving movement, or preparing your body for activity.

In most cases, no. If you’re receiving massage therapy as part of another treatment plan, your provider may recommend it. If you have questions, our team is happy to help.

Be sure to wear clothing you’re comfortable in. Your therapist will explain what to expect before your session begins and answer any questions you have.

Your number of recommended sessions depends on your symptoms and your goals. Some patients benefit from a single session, while others see the best results through ongoing treatment.
